Great air travel bargains are easy to find if you know how to look for cheap flights. Much depends on how you travel and how flexible your departure and return dates are. It is conceivable that you could save anywhere from a few dollars to the entire cost of your airfare. In many cases, just by booking early (or late), you can probably reduce the cost of your flights by around 15 to 20 percent.
One thing to consider is the fact that almost all of the major airlines offer some type of a frequent flyer program. If you travel frequently then you can earn points towards free or discounted (cheap) air travel in the future. Even if you are not a frequent flyer, it is a good idea to sign up for one or more of these travel rewards programs. They usually cost nothing and only require that you fill out a form in order to sign up. Be sure to keep your frequent flyer information stored somewhere that you will remember. It can be a little frustrating if you are about to book a flight and you are asked for your frequent flyer number and you can't remember where you placed it.
When searching for flights, you can check specific dates or you can check a variety of dates in order to see which dates the airlines are offering at a lower rate. Many airlines offer cheap flights at a certain time of the year. They may also have a function that allows you to search a broad range of dates in order to find the cheapest flights. You could also set up alerts and some websites will email when the specific flight that you want to watch is available for you to buy at a cheap price. In general, airline tickets are cheapest in the off season (September through April).
If you are looking for a cheap flight then you should book as soon as possible. On the other hand, taking advantage of last minute flight deals is another way to get your air travel at a cheap price. In the old days, you would simply tell your travel agent when and wear you would like to fly and he or she would go about finding you the cheapest flights. These days, much of that work is left up to you. The good news is that by doing the research yourself, you will be able to allow yourself more flexibility in your travel plans and you will have full control over your flight plans.
